Community-Led Public Safety
Program

The Cherokee Street Community Improvement District has launched a planning process to create a community-led vision for public safety.

In June 2020, the board of the Cherokee Street CID decided not to move forward with adding secondary police patrols to the street, recognizing that ‘more officers’ does not equate to ‘more safety’ for many in our neighborhood. Instead, the CID will dedicate the $24,000 set aside for those patrols towards investments identified by our community that make everyone feel safer.

The planning process to create this vision will have 3 phases or steps:

Step 1: Listening & Learning

The Goal

Gather ideas from community members and experts regarding new ways to ensure public safety, desired outcomes and research best practices from other places.

The Work:

Cherokee Street CID staff and board members will research the efforts of other cities and commercial districts to improve public safety. The CID will convene a community advisory group to guide this planning process and to identify desired outcomes and brainstorm potential public safety initiatives.

We Want to Hear from You:

Sign up to attend a virtual listening session of 10 community members
Upcoming Dates: Wednesday August 5th at Noon; Thursday August 6th at 7 PM; Wednesday August 12th at 6 PM.

Step 2: Prioritizing Solutions

The Goal

Get input from the community about which of the public safety efforts they most want to see implemented on Cherokee Street

The Work:

Cherokee Street CID staff, board members and the community advisory group will engage the public through online surveys, community meetings and other formats to identify the community's priorities for short-term and long-term actions.

Step 3: Implementation

The Goal

Put the gathered ideas into action and begin the foundational work of building a safer community.

The Work:

Cherokee Street CID staff, committees and partner organizations will implement the ideas identified by the community. An open invitation will be made throughout this process to encourage interested community members to join the CID's public safety committee and help guide the continued iteration of this work. CID staff will track impact of these efforts on the outcomes identified in step 1.
