The Cherokee Street Community Improvement District has launched a planning process to create a community-led vision for public safety.
In June 2020, the board of the Cherokee Street CID decided not to move forward with adding secondary police patrols to the street, recognizing that ‘more officers’ does not equate to ‘more safety’ for many in our neighborhood. Instead, the CID will dedicate the $24,000 set aside for those patrols towards investments identified by our community that make everyone feel safer.
The planning process to create this vision will have 3 phases or steps:
Get input from the community about which of the public safety efforts they most want to see implemented on Cherokee Street
Cherokee Street CID staff, board members and the community advisory group will engage the public through online surveys, community meetings and other formats to identify the community's priorities for short-term and long-term actions.
Put the gathered ideas into action and begin the foundational work of building a safer community.
Cherokee Street CID staff, committees and partner organizations will implement the ideas identified by the community. An open invitation will be made throughout this process to encourage interested community members to join the CID's public safety committee and help guide the continued iteration of this work. CID staff will track impact of these efforts on the outcomes identified in step 1.
